Find you and your partner's next date idea using IDK Tonight's new mobile app.

Cobble

OVERVIEW
Problem

“What do you want to do tonight?”

“Hmm…I don’t know… what about you?”
“I don’t know.”

It’s the never-ending question that couples try to answer but with minimal success. The result is going to the same usual places with not much room for exploration. It’s a lot of work to find and plan date ideas, and IDK Tonight aims to tackle just that.

Solution

Cobble is IDK Tonight’s new app designed for couples to find and plan exciting dates with ease. Both you and your partner can find great ideas that you actually want to go on, and the app also helps with the planning.

Couples will spend more time enjoying their dates rather than figuring out what to do.

My Role

UX/UI Design

Scope

iOS & Android apps

Team

Michael Cho (UX/UI Designer)
Daoyi Wang (UX/UI Designer)
Luis Menacho (UX Director)

Tools

Sketch, InVision, Zeplin

My Contribution

As one of the UX designers on the project, I helped create user flows, the sitemap, wireframes, visual designs, and interactive prototypes for user feedback and testing.

Swipe
On date ideas

Both you and your partner swipe on “Date cards.” Right for yes, and left for no.

Match
With your partner

You get a match when both swipe right. From there you can schedule when to go.

Go
On dates you both love

Spend your time going out and enjoying your dates instead of planning them all day.

Our Approach
1
Workshop

IDK Tonight's founders provided us high-level specs, sketches, and basic wireframes. We interviewed the team with more detailed questions to map out the project scope.

2
Sitemap

Based on the gathered requirements and user journeys from the workshop, we came up with a sitemap. We then received feedback from the client and reiterated it as necessary for MVP.

3
Wireframes

Once the sitemap was finalized, we began creating lo-fi wireframes. By starting on these black and white interfaces, we focused on content, functionalities available, and intended behaviors.

4
Prototype

We uploaded the wireframes to InVision, linked the screens, and added in hotspots. These prototypes served as a helpful means to explore and convey design solutions by seeing the interactive user flow from one screen to another.

5
Visuals

Based on some examples of IDK Tonight’s preferred visual styles, we created some high-fidelity visual concepts. After finalizing our visual style, we applied it to the wireframes.

DESIGN
Workshop

Our one-day workshop enabled us to get a better understanding of IDK Tonight’s goals and brainstorm solutions. We went over their existing sketches, wireframes, and created user journeys to help define MVP and led exercises to define success, failure, user personas, and functional use cases.

Sitemap

Using our findings from the workshop and discussions with our development team, we created the sitemap and iterated when necessary.

Wireframes

We created the wireframes for each page sound in the sitemap and presented them to receive feedback from both the IDK Tonight team and our developers. Upon receiving feedback, we reiterated to improve our team's work.

Prototype

Having uploaded the screens to InVision, we encouraged the IDK Tonight team to provide feedback. While starting the visual design, we postponed some changes to the wireframes to be made while applying the visuals to them.

After
Visuals

Our visual design concept was approved, and we applied it to all of the wireframes. We also implemented some of the design changes based on feedback received toward the end of the wireframing to save time.

LAUNCH
iOS Launch

IDK Tonight officially released the iOS version in June 2020 with the android app in development.

Possible Improvements
Visual Process

Finding the right visual style was difficult because of the amount of back-and-forth that occurred. Preference and common good practice clashed several times, and compromises were made. However, we still were able to create a great visual design for the app.

Reinventing the Wheel

Meeting the demands of designing new and creative ways to perform simple tasks became a recurring pattern while wireframing. Creating unique, interactive experiences in an app is great, but sometimes it costs familiarity. We had to push back on a few ideas to keep the app’s behavior intuitive for users.

CONCLUSION
Final Thoughts

With Cobble out now in the Apple app store, it’s exciting to see the app that I’ve worked on officially launched into the market. The response has been positive from those who have used it, and it’s another project I can proudly say that I’ve been involved with that can be downloaded from the app store.
